Garage to ADU
Our client hired our firm to convert the attached garage of their multifamily building into a 750-square-foot Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). This ADU includes two bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen, and living spaces.
To enhance privacy and allow for parallel parking, we strategically placed the ADU entry on the side yard, as the rear of the building faces an alley. When working on multifamily buildings, it’s crucial to leverage existing conditions to minimize engineering and construction costs. For this project, we utilized the existing garage door openings for the new bedroom windows and placed the new tanked water heater in the existing nearby laundry room.
These types of projects involve extensive coordination among various engineers to meet the client’s design needs, budget, and functionality requirements. Our client successfully increased their property value by adding an additional unit, thereby contributing to the much-needed housing supply in the heart of the City of San Diego.
